The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Education is pleased to announce October 2013 as College Application Month. Throughout the month of October, high schools across the state will host College Application Day events to assist students with the college application process. The goal of College Application Month is to provide a forum for all South Carolina seniors to complete and file college applications. While much of the focus of College Application Month is geared toward first-generation college students and students who may not otherwise apply to college, we encourage participating high schools to include activities for all students, including freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have already applied to college.
The College Application Month Initiative comes at a critical time in our state’s history. Overwhelming evidence reveals that higher levels of education lead to greater prosperity and competitiveness in the knowledge economy. However, South Carolina is well short of the national average and behind the national leaders in the proportion of adults who hold graduate/professional and baccalaureate degrees. At the associate degree level, South Carolina exceeds the national average but is well behind the leading states. College Application Month is designed to expand statewide college access and awareness.
2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Results
Congratulations to the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 High Schools and Regional Site Coordinators!
Thank you to the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 South Carolina College Application Week high schools, South Carolina College Application Week Regional Site Coordinators and volunteers!
The first South Carolina College Application Week was a tremendous success! During the event, which was held throughout October and November of 2009, 1,000 students received assistance completing and filing college applications. Thirty-six percent of each pilot high school’s senior class received assistance during College Application Week. On average, each student completed 2 applications and a total of 2,000 applications were submitted to colleges throughout the state.
Throughout the month of October 2010, 57 South Carolina high schools hosted individual College Application Day events where 15,000 students received assistance completing and filing college applications. On average, each student completed two applications and a total of over 30,000 applications were submitted to colleges throughout the state of South Carolina.
In 2011, over 100 high schools participated in South Carolina, 22,500 high school seniors attended, and approximately 45,000 college applications were filled out. This year, we will increase college awareness opportunities for our high school seniors across the state and provide them with the resources they need to apply for post-secondary education.
In 2012, 152 high schools participated in South Carolina during College Application Month, 32,178 high school students attended, and approximately 49,000 college applications were completed. We are currently preparing for Phase II of the college access process: College Goal South Carolina (www.collegegoalsc.org) which will be held in 22 locations around our state in February, 2014.
